Administrator for the United Food and Commercial Workers National Health and Welfare Fund, Glenn Di Biasi, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about the impact of artificial intelligence on the health and welfare industry. Di Biasi also discussed new AI uses in the education industry and how he thinks the government should regulate AI.
Artificial Intelligence has been discussed in the health and welfare industry for over a decade, Di Biasi said. They’ve had a chance to prepare for the transition, however for his team, they’ve chosen a different approach to AI implementation. The UFCW Health and Welfare Fund only uses AI in a basic capacity. Meanwhile, they rely on partners like EmpiRx Health to run the deeper usages of artificial intelligence. EmpiRx Health, UFCW Health and Welfare Fund’s pharmacy benefit manager, uses the Johns Hopkins University ACG model for data analytics.
With the widespread use of ChatGPT, it was announced that Harvard has added the use of ChatGPT into their computer science courses. Di Biasi, a part-time professor, also chooses to implement ChatGPT into his courses. However, Di Biasi focuses on the human side of ChatGPT, such as the way it can enhance or streamline the processes already being done. Early implementation like these will only help the future integrations of AI, as the users will already have experience with the technology, and the learning process will be easier.
There have been questions regarding government regulations on the usage and integration of artificial intelligence. Di Biasi agrees there should be regulations, but the creation of the regulations should involve everyone— creators, developers and users. The regulations should be enforceable by a group similar to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Di Biasi, believes that government officials should use the American Care Act as an example of the process needed to find the correct regulations for AI.
