Written by awfblog | March 11, 2025

Jon Schleuss, President of The NewsGuild, Communications Workers of America (TNG-CWA) joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss efforts to restrict the press under the Trump administration, significant contract victories for media workers and organizing strategies within The NewsGuild.

As the Trump administration continues to challenge press freedom, Schleuss discussed the administration's attempts to control media narratives. He detailed how the administration has barred reputable organizations like the Associated Press from the Oval Office and Air Force 1, citing their refusal to comply with renaming geographical terms. This move, along with the administration's control over the press pool, has raised concerns about the erosion of journalistic independence. Schleuss emphasized the global repercussions of these actions, noting how similar tactics are being adopted by other governments, simultaneously threatening the integrity of the free press worldwide.

On the other side of the spectrum, Schleuss shared The NewsGuild's recent success in securing a three-year contract for NBC News Digital NewsGuild members following a 94 percent ratification vote. This contract, achieved after a five-year struggle, includes substantial pay increases, job security measures and the elimination of forced arbitration in discrimination cases. Schleuss said the agreement marks a significant victory for the Guild, demonstrating the power of collective bargaining in improving working conditions and ensuring fair treatment for journalists. He also highlighted similar achievements with Gannett's largest papers in New Jersey and New York, where workers secured life-changing wage increases and protections against the misuse of AI in journalism.

Finally, Schleuss also discussed The NewsGuild's organizing strategies, which focus on empowering members to become organizers. He said the approach has been instrumental in expanding the Guild's reach, particularly in digital media outlets. By fostering a culture of worker-to-worker organizing, the Guild has been able to rapidly grow its membership and secure significant victories. Schleuss pointed out that this strategy not only strengthens the union but also ensures members feel a sense of ownership and involvement in their union's activities, making it a truly member-driven organization.
