Policy Matters Ohio on Ohio's economic challenges and tax cuts

Written by awfblog | March 13, 2025

Zach Schiller, the Ohio Research Director for Policy Matters Ohio, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the impact of two decades of tax cuts, the potential consequences of further tax reductions and the importance of supporting public education over tax cuts for the wealthy.

Schiller highlighted the adverse effects of two decades of tax cuts in Ohio, disproportionately affecting working and low-income residents. He argued that these cuts have not delivered the promised economic benefits and have instead created budget shortfalls, particularly impacting public education funding. Schiller said the state has prioritized tax cuts for wealthy households while neglecting essential public services, comparing the situation to Kansas, where similar policies led to a reduction in school operating days due to budget constraints.

In discussing Gov. Mike DeWine’s recent comments, Schiller expressed his concern over the potential for further tax cuts, which he believes could exacerbate existing economic issues. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a fair tax system that ensures adequate funding for public services, particularly education. Schiller discussed the need for a balanced approach that does not benefit the wealthy at the expense of working and low-income Ohioans.

Schiller also introduced Policy Matters Ohio's proposed platform for addressing the state's budgetary challenges. The plan suggests reinstating a corporate income tax and increasing rates for high-income earners to ensure that those who can afford to pay more contribute their fair share. Schiller said such measures could provide the necessary revenue to support public education, libraries and other vital services, aligning with a majority of Ohioans' needs and values.
