Pat Gallagher, President of the North Coast Area Labor Federation, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the impact of tariffs on the economy, recent legislative changes in Ohio affecting university professors and the broader implications for union rights.

Gallagher discussed the complexities surrounding tariffs, emphasizing their potential as a tool to address trade inequities. However, he noted that blanket tariffs, as currently applied, lack precision and may not effectively support domestic industries. Gallagher said targeted tariffs could bolster sectors like steel, but the current approach leaves industries uncertain about long-term investments. This uncertainty hinders the potential for significant economic growth and job creation within the domestic market, he said.

Gallagher then discussed Ohio's recent legislative actions, particularly Senate Bill 1, which restricts university professors' rights, including the ability to strike and engage in collective bargaining. He expressed concern that this could be a precursor to broader attacks on union rights, reminiscent of past challenges like Ohio Senate Bill 5. Such measures might signal a strategic move to weaken collective bargaining through incremental legislative changes, posing a significant threat to labor rights in Ohio, Gallagher said.

Finally, Gallagher discussed the shifting political dynamics in Ohio, noting the state's transition from a balanced political environment to a predominantly Conservative stronghold. This shift has resulted in a supermajority that often overlooks labor concerns. Gallagher stressed the importance of engaging with both political parties to advance labor rights and improve living standards through union jobs. He emphasized that fostering dialogue and collaboration is crucial for the labor movement's future success in Ohio.
