Ohio AFL-CIO's Tim Burga on Libby Glass Strike and Redistricting

Written by awfblog | October 7, 2025

Tim Burga, President of the Ohio AFL-CIO, discussed the ongoing Libby Glass strike in Toledo, the importance of labor solidarity and Ohio's contentious redistricting process. He highlighted the workers' struggle for fair compensation, the community's support for the strike and the potential impact of gerrymandering on Ohio's political landscape.

Since Aug. 22, members of the United Steelworkers and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers have been on strike at Libby Glass. Burga explained that despite the company's profitability, management has been reluctant to offer fair contracts after workers made concessions during tougher times. A rally in Toledo aimed to bring attention to the situation and pressure the company to return to the bargaining table. Burga emphasized the strong unity among workers and community support for their cause.

He then addressed Ohio's redistricting process, expressing concern over potential gerrymandering by the Republican-controlled legislature. Burga noted the current congressional map disproportionately favors Republicans despite the state's more balanced political makeup. He spoke about the missed constitutional deadline for new maps and the likelihood of continued partisan maneuvering in the redistricting commission. Burga stressed the importance of fair maps and the ongoing efforts of voters and government groups to oppose gerrymandering.

The redistricting issue extends beyond Ohio, as Burga mentioned similar concerns in states such as Texas and Missouri. He criticized the overtly partisan nature of these efforts, particularly in light of President Donald Trump's push for pre-census redistricting in some states. Burga emphasized the need for continued vigilance and advocacy for fair representation, urging voters to stay engaged in the process and speak out against partisan manipulation of district boundaries.
