Jason Perlman, Political Director for the Ohio AFL-CIO, joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the current state of labor in Ohio and the challenges that lie ahead for labor in 2025.
Perlman's journey in the labor movement began with the Service Employees International Union in 1998. He joined the Ohio State Labor Federation as a communications coordinator in 2008 and became political director in 2012, following the defeat of Ohio Senate Bill 5.
Despite the changing political climate, Perlman believes Ohioans still understand the value of unions. Perlman highlighted the disconnect between electoral politics and public opinion on labor issues. While gerrymandering has shifted the political landscape in Ohio, support for workers' rights remains strong. He said that this paradox presents both challenges and opportunities for the labor movement.
Perlman also emphasized the importance of public education as a battleground for labor rights. He discussed how the issue impacts both economic mobility and social justice. Another pressing challenge facing Ohio's labor movement is the threat of anti-union legislation. Perlman warned of potential attacks on public employees, through policies like annual reauthorization requirements for union membership.
