Norm Wernet, State Director of the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss critical issues surrounding Social Security, including the potential risks posed by unauthorized data access, the impact of office closures and ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of the fund’s system.
Wernet discussed the situation involving Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team attempting to access sensitive Social Security data. He emphasized the potential dangers of untrained individuals handling personal information, such as names, addresses and bank details. The unions, alongside the Alliance for Retired Americans, successfully secured a temporary restraining order to prevent this access. Wernet said this type of action by DOGE undermines the importance of federal protections and could risk retirees' personal data if left unchecked.
He then addressed the closure of Social Security offices, which threatens to disrupt service for millions of Americans. Wernet pointed out that with 47 field offices closing, individuals will face long lines and delays in verifying their identities. He said the situation is made worse by Congress's decade-long underfunding of the Social Security Administration, leading to understaffed offices and reduced accessibility for those in need.
Finally, Wernet outlined the proactive measures being taken by the Alliance for Retired Americans to combat these challenges. The organization is mobilizing efforts across the country, organizing demonstrations at Social Security offices and engaging with Congress to demand action. By highlighting the stakes involved, Wernet said they aim to protect the system that supports 73 million Americans, including retirees and people with disabilities.
