During the conversation, Mathews highlighted several significant wins for the CWA this year. One standout achievement was the progress of the Call Center Jobs Retention Act in Michigan. This legislation aims to prevent companies from outsourcing call center jobs by denying them government contracts and loans if they move jobs overseas. Mathews emphasized the bipartisan support these bills have garnered, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of protecting American jobs. Mathews also discussed the broader political landscape, noting that despite the challenges posed by the recent presidential election, the CWA has maintained strong support for worker-friendly candidates. This resilience is crucial as unions face potential attacks on workers' rights and labor laws. Mathews reminded members of the labor movement that while the political climate may shift, the commitment to protecting workers should remain steadfast. One of the most pressing challenges discussed was the potential impact of Trump's nominee for U.S. Labor Secretary, Representative Lori Chavez de Reimer. While her support for the Protect the Right to Organize Act is promising, Mathews cautioned against complacency. He stressed the importance of vigilance and preparedness, urging union members to stay informed and engaged in politics. Mathews' advice was clear: unions must continue to advocate for workers' rights and be ready to counter any legislative efforts that threaten these rights. By staying proactive and united, unions can effectively navigate the challenges ahead.
