National Nurses United Members Fight for Patient Safety and Fair Treatment

Written by awfblog | August 21, 2025

Heidi Tujague and Terry Mogilles, registered nurses and members of National Nurses United (NNU), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss their recent strike at University Medical Center in New Orleans.

Tujague, a Forensic Nurse in the emergency department, explained that the two-day strike in July was prompted by unprecedented disciplinary actions against two strong union leaders. She said the nurses viewed the discipline as a direct attack on their union and a threat to all members. Despite lacking a finalized contract, Tujague explained that the strike garnered significant support, with nearly 75 percent of nurses refusing to cross the picket line. This solidarity demonstrated the nurses' commitment to fair treatment and their determination to protect their right to organize, she said.

Mogilles, a veteran nurse with 47 years of experience, emphasized the detrimental effects of corporate healthcare on patient care and working conditions. She noted that as hospitals prioritize profits over patients, issues like extended wait times, understaffing and inadequate resources have become increasingly common. Mogilles argued that the union's fight extends beyond their working conditions to encompass broader healthcare disparities and the need for a Medicare for All system that prioritizes patient care over corporate interests.

The two nurses also discussed the ongoing contract negotiations, which have been underway since December 2023. They expressed frustration with the hospital's tactics, including the use of high-priced law firms to stall negotiations. Despite these challenges, recent administrative changes and progress on non-discrimination and harassment policies have given them hope for a fair contract. Tujague and Mogilles both stressed the importance of continued solidarity and community support in their fight for better working conditions and patient care.
