Chris Lalevee, Business Agent for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825 and Director of the IUOE Peer Support Program, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss mental health awareness in the construction industry, his personal experience with mental health challenges, the importance of recognizing signs of crisis in coworkers and how the IUOE is implementing their peer support program.
Lalevee's personal experiences with mental health issues began in his mid-20s when he said he experienced anxiety, depression and suicidal ideations. Despite his outward success, he attempted to take his own life multiple times. Lalevee said his experience drove him to seek help and eventually create the Member Assistance Program within Local 825. Lalevee talked about the importance of sharing personal stories to break down stigma and encourage others to seek help.
Recognizing the signs of crisis in coworkers is crucial in the construction industry. Lalevee highlighted key indicators such as isolation, changes in appearance or behavior and decreased engagement at work. He stressed the importance of approaching colleagues with genuine concern, using phrases like, "I'm worried about you," to open conversations. Lalevee advised persistence in offering support, even if initially rebuffed, as individuals may not be ready to talk immediately but may reach out later when they feel comfortable.
As mental health continues to be a focus within the trades, unions are taking proactive steps to support mental health. Lalevee discussed the development of peer support programs, like IUOE’s Peer Support Program, for which he now serves as director. These initiatives provide confidential assistance, offer resources and work to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and substance abuse issues. Lalevee noted that there has also been increased engagement from employers, as they recognize that a healthy workforce is more productive. He discussed the importance of making mental health resources readily available on job sites and incorporating mental health discussions into safety talks.
