Melissa Cropper Fights for Teachers' Rights and Fair Pensions

Written by awfblog | October 21, 2025

Melissa Cropper, President of the Ohio Federation of Teachers, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss crucial issues affecting Ohio educators. Cropper addressed a lawsuit challenging changes to the state teachers' retirement system, unfair labor practices at Equitas Health and the importance of local school board elections.

The Ohio Federation of Teachers and other education unions filed a lawsuit against recent changes to the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) board composition. Cropper explained that the state legislature, in a late-night budget amendment, reduced elected board members from seven to three while increasing political appointees to eight. This move significantly diminishes educators' voices in managing their own pensions. The lawsuit argues that this change violates Ohio's constitution, specifically the single-subject and three-reading rules, as it was inserted into an unrelated budget bill without proper public scrutiny.

Cropper also highlighted ongoing issues with Equitas Health, where unionized employees face unfair treatment. Despite successful unionization efforts, Equitas offers only a 1 percent raise to union staff while non-union employees receive 3 percent. The company claims this disparity is due to pending unfair labor practice charges, which Cropper sees as retaliation against union activity. The Ohio Federation of Teachers is mobilizing collective action to push for fair contract negotiations and wage increases.

With some school board elections approaching next month, Cropper emphasized their critical importance in shaping public education. She urged voters to carefully consider candidates' stances on education issues, warning against those with political agendas that may not prioritize students' best interests. Cropper stressed the need for board members who genuinely support public education and can make informed decisions about school funding and policies.
