Mechanical Insulators: Saving Energy and Lives Through Expertise

Written by awfblog | October 22, 2025

Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Trust, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act, the importance of trade shows for industry education and the critical role of proper insulation of mechanical insulation and firestopping materials.

The Federal Mechanical Insulation Act continues to gain bipartisan support in Congress, with 33 co-sponsors evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Ielmini expressed frustration over delays caused by the government shutdown but remains optimistic about the bill's prospects. He highlighted ongoing lobbying efforts, including work on a companion Senate bill sponsored by Senator Cortez Masto (D-NV), with potential Republican co-sponsorship from Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).

Ielmini emphasized the continued relevance of trade shows for educating the public, engineers, architects and contractors about mechanical insulation. Unlike other trades, mechanical insulators must actively promote awareness of their craft. At recent events like the Firestop Contractors Insulation Association Conference, Ielmini's team engaged with both union and non-union professionals, highlighting the availability of skilled labor for firestopping.

Proper installation of mechanical insulation and firestopping are crucial for energy efficiency and safety. Incorrectly installed insulation significantly reduces its effectiveness, while improperly installed firestopping systems can lead to loss of life in a fire, Ielmini said. He underscored the importance of union training programs to ensure high-quality installation that saves energy, extends equipment lifecycles and protects lives.
