Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss two critical initiatives - promoting energy efficiency through the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act and addressing mental health awareness within the construction industry.

Ielmini shared updates on the ongoing legislative push to require a Mechanical Insulation Energy Audit in all federal buildings through the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act. This legislation will save taxpayer dollars by increasing energy efficiency in federal buildings through properly installed and maintained mechanical insulation. He discussed how the audits would use a thermal imaging camera to visually illustrate the energy loss from uninsulated pipes. Ielmini said these cameras have reinforced the importance of investing in mechanical insulation.

In addition to energy efficiency, Ielmini addressed the pressing issue of mental health, particularly in the construction industry, where the suicide rate is alarmingly high. He highlighted the Insulators Member Assistance Program (IMAP), which provides support and resources for members and their families struggling with mental health challenges. As the holiday season can be a particularly stressful time, Ielmini emphasized the importance of reaching out for help and utilizing available resources, such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

By advocating for both energy efficiency and mental health awareness, Ielmini and the LMCT is making strides to improve the well-being of workers and to promote sustainable practices. Their efforts demonstrate the power of education and proactive support in driving positive change within the industry.
