Mark Wallace, BLET President, talks Rail Safety, Jobs and Regulations

Written by awfblog | July 22, 2025

Mark Wallace, National President of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the potential problems with Mexican crews operating trains in the U.S., the push for automated rail operations and the ongoing fight to maintain safety regulations.

Wallace expressed his concern over Union Pacific's request to allow Mexican nationals to operate trains up to nine miles into U.S. territory. This move threatens American jobs and raises serious safety concerns, as Mexican crews may not meet the same certification and language requirements as U.S. workers. Wallace highlighted the potential risks, including difficulties in communication during emergencies. He emphasized the need to protect American jobs and maintain safety standards, urging the current administration to reconsider this decision.

The push for automation in the rail industry remains a significant challenge, with companies seeking to reduce crew sizes and implement remote-controlled operations. Wallace stressed the irreplaceable role of human operators, particularly in ensuring safety and responding to unforeseen situations. He cited incidents where remote-controlled trains caused accidents, including one where a locomotive ran through a house in Buffalo, N.Y. Wallace said that while technology can complement human workers, it should not replace them, especially given the potential risks to public safety.

Finally, Wallace discussed how regulatory rollbacks pose another threat to rail safety and worker protections. He noted that many safety regulations were established in response to tragic accidents, and weakening these rules could lead to increased risks. Wallace expressed concern over the current administration's attempts to relax or eliminate over 60 regulations, potentially compromising safety standards that have been in place for years. He said there is a need for continued vigilance and advocacy to maintain these crucial safeguards for workers and the public.
