Local strives to recruit younger members to offset aging workforce

United Association (UA) Local 4 Business Manager Robbie McCarthy joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the need to recruit younger members to replace an aging workforce.

About 48 percent of Local 4 members are between the ages of 55 to 64, which is why the Local’s executive board is making an effort to recruit younger members, McCarthy said. The Local 4 Executive Board consists of younger members, most in their 30s, which enables them to bring fresher ideas to the table. He then detailed the Local’s efforts to recruit new apprentices to help offset the large number of retirees.

McCarthy also talked about work the Local’s membership is performing for Commonwealth Fusion, a venture of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and the U.S. Department of Defense to study the potential of nuclear fusion as renewable energy. He also explained the importance of properly installed residential and commercial heat pumps.
