Local governments hoard stimulus funds, offer little worker support

Andrew Burcham, General Counsel and Staff Representative Organizer for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 962, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed how the state of Kentucky is hoarding funds from the American Rescue Plan when it should be used to support essential workers.

Council 962 represents about 7,000 government employees in Kentucky and Indiana.

Burcham talked about U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) recent comments stating Americans would return to work when stimulus money runs out. He discussed why these comments are insulting to working families and do not reflect the economic realities many Americans face in this challenging economy.

Burcham also touched on alleged political corruption that has led to numerous lawsuits in Louisville, Ky., and the challenges of organizing in Kentucky, a So-Called “Right to Work” state.
