Brent Booker, General President of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the union's growth, innovative programs and future outlook.
Booker, who became LIUNA's 11th General President in May 2023, shared insights on the union's organizing efforts. The union has achieved organizing success through its comprehensive approach, which empowers every union member, from apprentices to leadership, to be an organizer. Booker emphasized the importance of this all-hands-on-deck strategy. He explained that LIUNA's growth is not just about numbers but creating meaningful change in workers' lives.
Earlier in 2024, LIUNA implemented innovative programs like LEAN (Laborers Escaping Adversity Now), which addresses mental health and addiction issues in the construction industry. This peer-to-peer support system demonstrates LIUNA's commitment to holistic worker well-being, going beyond traditional union benefits. Booker said the program tackles this head-on by providing education, resources and support to members struggling with mental health or addiction.
Looking ahead, Booker remains optimistic about LIUNA's future despite potential changes in the political landscape. He emphasized the importance of adapting while remaining focused on core union values. Booker said there is plenty to be excited about for members, as the union will introduce paid maternity leave for LIUNA members starting in 2025. He said this initiative further illustrates the union's commitment to addressing the evolving needs of its workforce by supporting members both on and off the job.
