Levin: “Right to Freeload’ has created worst income inequality in 100 years

Distinguished Senior Fellow at The Center for American Progress Andy Levin appeared on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed how Michigan’s repeal of So-Called “Right to Work” legislation is referendum-proof.

Levin previously served as Michigan’s 9th District Congressman from 2019 to 2023.

He explained that the Michigan Senate added language to the repeal legislation, which was approved by the House on March 21. The changes added by the Senate made the legislation an appropriation bill, which means it cannot be overturned through a voter referendum.

Besides repealing private sector So-Called “Right to Work” laws, the legislature also passed a separate bill to repeal public sector So-Called “Right to Work” laws in the state. This bill cannot override the U.S. Supreme Court’s Janus decision.

He also noted that both chambers passed a third bill to reinstate Prevailing Wages for public construction projects. All the bills now await the signature of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Levin then explained why he refers to So-Called “Right to Work” laws as Right to Freeload laws, and detailed how it is an attempt to financially undermine unions. He feels these laws have led to the the worst worker income to wealth inequality in a century.
