Len DiCosimo, President of the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, American Federation of Musicians Local 4, appeared on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and spoke about the significance of Workers Memorial Day, the ongoing challenges faced by unions and the innovative Solidarity Series music event.
DiCosimo highlighted the importance of Workers Memorial Day, observed annually on April 28, to honor workers who have died or been injured on the job. He expressed concern over House Resolution 86, a bill to nullify the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Act. DiCosimo emphasized that OSHA is crucial for worker safety, noting that its elimination would undermine decades of progress in protecting workers. He pointed out the need for increased funding for OSHA to address ongoing workplace hazards and prevent fatalities, underscoring the critical role of safety regulations in safeguarding workers' lives.
Discussing the broader challenges faced by unions, DiCosimo addressed the persistent introduction of So-Called “Right to Work” bills in Ohio, which threaten to weaken union power. He explained that despite these legislative efforts, strong lobbying by unions, particularly the building trades, has prevented such bills from advancing. DiCosimo also touched on the Cleveland Institute of Music faculty's successful negotiation for union representation, highlighting the importance of collective bargaining in securing fair wages and working conditions. He stressed the need for continued advocacy and vigilance to protect workers' rights in both public and private sectors.
Finally, DiCosimo introduced the Solidarity Series, a monthly live music event held at the Treelawn Social Club in Cleveland. This initiative aims to engage the community by combining music with discussions on legislative issues affecting workers. By featuring local musicians and fostering dialogue on topics like admission tax relief and worker safety, the series seeks to raise awareness and promote civic engagement. DiCosimo emphasized the power of music as a tool for advocacy, creating a space where art and activism intersect to inspire change and support labor movements.
