On this episode of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Anson Poe and Chris Tucker, two figures behind the successful unionization of lab workers at Tempus AI, a healthcare artificial intelligence biotech company in Chicago, discussed the organizing campaign that led to the creation of Machinists Local H1, the first healthcare unit of its kind in the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Midwest Territory.
The conversation began with personal stories that highlight the backgrounds of both guests and their motivation for unionization. Poe, who is originally from Iowa, grew up in a union community. He noticed treatment issues at Tempus AI and took the initiative to seek change. Tucker, a lifelong union member, emphasized the importance of achieving a work-life balance and ensuring that workers feel respected and secure in their jobs. They said their diverse perspectives highlight a general shift toward unionization among younger generations in emerging fields, such as biotech and AI.
The organizing campaign at Tempus AI was marked by secrecy, risk and persistence. Poe recalled his unfamiliarity with union processes at the outset and credited mentorship and transparent union representatives for guiding him. Workers initially feared retaliation for signing union cards due to perceived surveillance by management, but as momentum grew and more departments joined, they said support solidified. Even anti-union tactics from management, such as mandatory meetings, backfired and ultimately increased support. He noted that the drive culminated in a successful union vote, with over 80 percent of the bargaining unit in favor.
Securing the first contract brought tangible improvements, especially in workplace safety and compensation. Poe and Tucker stated that the three-year agreement includes wage increases of up to 12.5 percent and establishes a safety committee, empowering workers to directly address ongoing hazards, such as chemical exposure and HVAC issues. Both guests described improved communication with management and gains in workplace dignity and security. Their story not only sets a precedent for others in the high-tech sector but also encourages fellow biotech workers to connect and explore collective bargaining for better working conditions.
