Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary Chris Hannan joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the United To House LA ballot measure, which he called one of the largest affordable housing initiatives in the country. L.A. voters will consider the measure this November.
The Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building and Construction Trades Council is part of a coalition of community leaders supporting the measure. The Council represents 48 local unions and District Councils in 14 trades, with a membership of more than 100,000 skilled men and women.
If approved by a majority of voters in November, the measure would create a 4 percent tax on properties sold for more than $5 million, and a 5.5 percent tax on properties sold for more than $10 million. If passed, it is expected to create more than 26,000 homes for people experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness, and help about 69,000 people over the next 10 years.
Hannan talked about the housing problem in L.A. and why affordable housing is critical to working families. If the measure passes, the construction will be done under Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) using local labor, he added.
Hannan then spoke about the construction of a $277 million Nickelodeon Hotel and Resort in Garden Grove, which is being built by the Council’s membership under a PLA.
