As a District Representative for the Safety and Health Department at the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers Wayne Creasap has been busy during the COVID-19 pandemic. He discussed the issues faced and progress made by the Ironworkers on the Aug. 31 episode of America’s Work Force Radio Podcast.
Through a lens of experience working with union members, Creasap said the training union members receive adequately prepares them to work safely in the construction industry. The precautions put in place due to COVID-19 are no different and he said union members are doing everything they can to adhere to the guidelines.
He then touched on the shortage of personal protective equipment, saying that N95 masks were difficult to find at the beginning of the pandemic, as many of the masks were being shipped to hospitals.
Creasap then said Ironworkers have had very little difficulty adjusting to many of the enhanced PPE standards as they understand it is to protect them and help them continue working.
With regards to how the Ironworkers have worked to help their membership, Creasap said they provided updated training materials and posters to help remind workers of new guidelines and procedures.
Finally, he said the Ironworkers have hosted round table style webinars to discuss best safety practices and protocols.
