Operating Engineers Local 150 representatives Dale Pierson, General Counsel, Kristine Kavanagh, Director of Communications and Marty Durkan, Assistant to the President-Business Manager, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the ongoing strike at QSL America's Chicago port facility.

The strike, which began on May 22, involves 28 workers who are not members of Local 150, and stems from four unfair labor practice charges filed against QSL America. Pierson explained that the company fired employees who reached out to the union for guidance and support regarding safety concerns and substandard wages. He said the understaffed National Labor Relations Board has slowed the processing of these charges and prolonged the strike. Despite the challenges, Local 150 remains resolute in its support of the striking workers, employing tactics such as the iconic inflatable rat to draw attention to the dispute, Pierson added.

Kavanagh spoke about working conditions at the port facility, which are a major point of contention. She highlighted numerous safety issues, including faulty machinery, hydraulic leaks and a lack of backup alarms. These hazards, combined with disciplinary actions against workers who voice concerns, have created an environment where employees feel they cannot perform their jobs safely, said Durkan. The union's efforts extend beyond the picket line, with Local 150 assisting workers in filing safety-related charges with OSHA and other regulatory bodies to address these critical issues, he said.

The strike has garnered support from the broader labor movement, including a visit from the AFL-CIO's "It's Better in a Union" bus tour. Kavanagh noted that the solidarity has bolstered the workers' resolve, emphasizing that their fight is part of a larger struggle for workers' rights and dignity. As the strike continues, Pierson said Local 150 remains committed to achieving a resolution that addresses the workers' concerns and establishes a safer, more equitable workplace at the Chicago port facility.
