“It’s better in a Union” AFL-CIO’s Labor Day message to America

Written by awfblog | September 4, 2023

Secretary-Treasurer from the AFL-CIO, Fred Redmond, makes a special Labor Day appearance on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the “State of the Unions” address from AFL-CIO.

It’s the Hot Labor Summer, and to talk about the Labor movement, the AFL-CIO’s president, Liz Schuler and Redmond held a “State of the Unions” for the labor movement. In this discussion, they discussed the history and importance of Labor Day. Redmond discussed the importance of solidarity and collective bargaining on the middle class. Not only should Labor Day be a celebration of workers, but also a chance to focus on the next steps to grow the labor movement.

During their address, Redmond and Schuler highlighted the young workers and their expectations of the labor movement. The AFL-CIO found that 88 percent of workers under 38 support the labor movement in a recently commissioned poll. He called this a good sign for the future of the labor movement, as it shows a movement that resonates with workers early and late in their careers. Sharing the message of strength and safety in the workplace that unions provide is the goal of the movement Schuler and Redmond sought to create when they were voted into their roles in 2021.

Going forward, the AFL-CIO pledges to do more, Redmond said. This includes more recruiting and organization at the grassroots level, and creating the largest political action group the AFL-CIO has ever seen. Most importantly, the AFL-CIO seeks to finish the job of protecting workers across America and will pursue every method they can to ensure there are good union jobs available to bolster the middle class.
