Catherine Turcer, Executive Director for Common Cause Ohio, appeared on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and spoke about Issue 1 in Ohio, which is a ballot initiative to end gerrymandering.

Turcer discussed Issue 1, which would amend the Ohio Constitution to take the power to draw legislative districts away from politicians and give it to a non-partisan resident board.

She said the ballot language for Issue 1 is confusing. Turner called it “Orwellian” and believes it is hard to understand and explain.

She also discussed a change in Ohio law that requires registered voters to present photo identification at the polls in order to vote. Those who do not have a photo ID on them can vote using a provisional ballot. However, for that ballot to be counted, the voter must return to their Board of Elections office no later than four days following Election Day to provide a qualifying form of identification. Turcer said in 2022, about 8 percent of provisional ballots were thrown out. Last year, under the new rules, just over 28 percent of provisional ballots were deemed ineligible due to no proof of photo ID.

Turcer urged anyone who runs into issues on Election Day to call the Election Protection hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683).
