Written by awfblog | July 29, 2022

New York Federal Plaza Immigration Court Judge Mimi Tsankov joined the AWF Union podcast to discuss how the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) stripped them of their right to unionize.

Tsankov said the Immigrations Court union was decertified in 2019 and now, the judges are starting the process to get their union back, as they have filed a petition to recertify the union. She then explained the recertification process.

Other challenges include a, very large case workload, with roughly 1.8 to 1.9 million backlogged cases. She believes hiring more judges and staff members is the only way to alleviate the backlog.
