Intel groundbreaking ceremony postponed over stalled legislation

Columbus/Central Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council Executive Secretary-Treasurer Dorsey Hager made his monthly appearance on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and provided an update on the Intel plant project after the semiconductor manufacturer announced it will postpone its July 22 groundbreaking ceremony because of stalled legislation in Congress.

The Innovation and Competition Act, is a proposed multibillion-dollar investment in the U.S. semiconductor industry that, if passed, will help protect domestic manufacturing from future supply chain disruptions in Asia. If the bill passes, Intel has indicated it will expand the semiconductor campus it is building in central Ohio from two fabs to eight fabs, taking the project from $20 billion to $100 billion.

Hager noted this will not affect the construction schedule and said he is confident the bill will eventually pass.

He also talked about a Google grant recently awarded to the Building Futures and Driving Futures programs.
