Dan Poteet, Business Manager of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 50, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for his members, the Local’s work outlook in Central Ohio and growing membership by recruiting more women and minority members.

Insulators Local 50 recently finalized a new CBA for its members. Poteet discussed the wage increases, healthcare benefit improvements and the addition of apprentices to the pension plan, among other improvements. The CBA will apply to all employers and is divided into two separate zones. Poteet explained why the Local was split into separate zones and what they’ve done to bring members into the same zone.

With the ongoing construction boom in Central Ohio, there is a constant work available for Local 50 members. Poteet highlighted several projects members are working and what’s in store for the future. This included the upcoming Cleveland Cliffs blast furnace project in Middletown, Ohio.

Over the past year, Local 50 has grown to 225 members, which includes 72 apprentices. Poteet talked about the recruitment and marketing campaign they are running with the help of BMA Media Group and how it is attracting more women and minorities. He also talked about the high retainment rates for female members and why he believes more women stay in the union than their male counterparts.
