Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the current state of mechanical insulation recruitment and the industry's efforts to address mental health concerns.

Ielmini highlighted the stark contrast between past and present recruitment efforts in the mechanical insulation trade. Where there were once hundreds of applicants lining up for apprenticeship opportunities, today's landscape presents a different challenge, He said. To meet the industry's manpower demands, he emphasized the need for unions and contractors to take innovative approaches to reach potential candidates.

Despite the recruitment challenges, Ielmini stressed the abundance of opportunities available in the construction industry. He said the opportunities to get into the trades right now is better than ever before. Ielmini added that a career in the trades gives members the chance to create generational change for their families.

One of the most pressing issues facing the construction industry is the alarming rate of mental health concerns and suicide among workers. Ielmini, who has been invited to participate in a panel on mental health in the building trades during the Construction Working Minds Summit in February, emphasized the importance of addressing these issues head-on. He emphasized the need to break down stigmas surrounding mental health in the trades, and provide accessible treatment and support systems. Together, Ielmini believes the trades can find a solution to improve mental health care.

Listen to the show above to hear more from Ielmini on the recruitment efforts in the mechanical insulation industry and how they are tackling the stigmas surrounding mental health care.
