Matt Biggs, President of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the 61st Constitutional Convention that took place in New Orleans earlier this month. Biggs also talked about how the union is trying to improve the mental health of members and their efforts to educate members on candidates in the November election.

The IFPTE 61st Constitutional Convention was the first in-person convention for the union in over six years. Biggs discussed the events at the convention, including himself and Secretary-Treasurer Gay Henson being reelected to another term. There were several notable labor leaders from the U.S. and Canada in attendance, and Biggs outlined the feeling of solidarity that was ever-present during the convention.

While at the convention, Biggs discussed the mental health forum that took place during the General Session. Conversations around mental health and addiction in union members have been increasing, and at every IFPTE event, Biggs said there is always a conversation on the importance of providing members with mental health support and addiction care. He further discussed why the IFPTE has placed a premium on their members mental and physical wellbeing and what the reception has been from members.

Finally, Biggs discussed the importance of getting members to vote in November, and making sure they understand the platforms of each candidate. Among the issues being discussed by members is Project 2025. Biggs explained the potential threats to the labor movement within the more than 900 page document.
