David Harris, a member of American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 394, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss how his life has changed since he began working a union job. He also talked about his experiences during his canvassing efforts in the Philadelphia area.
Harris has been an employee at the Philadelphia Water Department and a member of Local 394 for nine years. After being let go from a private sector, non-union job and comparing his work history to his wife’s, a union member, Harris said knew he needed to find a union job. He talked about the job security and benefits that have changed his life thanks to union representation.
It wasn’t enough for Harris to just be a part of a union, however. He immediately went to work sharing his experiences to shed light on the importance of union representation. He said that was how he got into canvassing and educating other union members on the facts about the election.
Harris discussed how union members have been bombarded with so much political messaging that the facts and policy conversations are often overlooked. Harris said politicians and unions should be focused on the proper dissemination of the information to better prepare and inform members. He explained how he has tried to help union members from both political parties become better informed about the facts of this election.
