Rich Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a potential government shutdown, rising healthcare costs and COVID-19 vaccine confusion.

As Oct. 1 approaches, the threat of a government shutdown intensifies. Fiesta highlighted the devastating impact of the recent "big, ugly, brutal bill," particularly on Affordable Care Act premiums. He cited a Kaiser Family Foundation study that warns that average ACA premiums could surge by 75 percent if Congress fails to extend current subsidies. This increase could leave millions without affordable healthcare, especially impacting those aged 55-64 who rely on these subsidies before becoming Medicare-eligible.

The COVID-19 vaccine situation remains unclear due to recent changes in the Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Immunizations practices and the lack of CDC guidelines. Fiesta noted inconsistent state-level responses and uncertainty about insurance coverage for the vaccine. He said that without insurance, individuals might pay up to $200 for a COVID-19 vaccine. Fiesta advised listeners to stay informed through state health department websites and the Alliance's weekly newsletter for the most current information.

Fiesta also expressed deep concern over the chaos surrounding what should be routine public health measures. He criticized the recent dismissal of experts and emphasized the government's responsibility to protect public health. Fiesta urged listeners to stay updated through the Alliance's website, text alerts and social media channels for the latest developments on these critical issues.
