Ohio AFL-CIO President Tim Burga joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed a recent Gallup poll that found 71 percent of Americans approve of unions – the highest rate since 1965 – and what it means for the future of organizing.
Burga said the favorability rating found in the poll matches the recent uptick in union elections. He credited the pro-union platform of the Biden Administration with making significant changes on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that have made it easier to organize. President Biden is the most pro-union president since Franklin Roosevelt, he added.
Burga then talked about AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler’s goal of organizing 1 million new members in the next decade and the need to elect more union-friendly politicians in the November election. He also spoke of the problem of gerrymandering in Ohio’s political districts.
