Written by awfblog | October 4, 2024

Fred Redmond, Secretary-Treasure of the AFL-CIO, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss his time at the 34th Biennial Ohio AFL-CIO Convention and the passion he witnessed at the gathering. He also talked about the port workers returning to work and remembered the late Bill Lucy.

Last week, Redmond was a featured speaker at the Ohio AFL-CIO Convention in Cleveland. He discussed the 34th edition of the convention and the positivity he witnessed from labor leaders across the state. Redmond addressed the importance of educating the public with facts ahead of the November General Election.

The International Longshoremen’s Association and United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. reached a tentative agreement to extend their Master Contract through Jan. 15, 2025. This means the members of the Longshoremen will return to work, and Redmond shared his opinion on the agreement.

Finally, Redmond remembered the late Bill Lucy, former Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees from 1972 to 2010. Redmond said Lucy was instrumental in several moments in labor, including the Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike in 1968. He spoke fondly of their interactions and Lucy's mentorship of Redmond over their years working together on behalf of the labor movement.
