Fiesta on the “Big Brutal Bill,” Medicaid cuts and legislative chaos

Written by awfblog | May 16, 2025

Rich Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, joined the America's Workforce Union Podcast to dissect the implications of what he calls the "big brutal bill"—more formally known as the U.S. House Spending Bill—currently under discussion. These include significant cuts to Medicaid, potential threats to Social Security and Medicare and the chaotic legislative process surrounding these issues.

Fiesta began by explaining what he believes the “big brutal bill” is. According to him, the proposed U.S. House Spending Bill includes a staggering $715 billion in cuts to Medicaid, which could result in millions of people losing their healthcare coverage. Fiesta emphasized his concern that these cuts would disproportionately affect seniors, children and disabled individuals, as Medicaid is a joint federal-state program. Reducing federal funding would leave states struggling to cover the shortfall, potentially stripping healthcare from those most in need, he said. Fiesta noted that despite claims of targeting waste and fraud, the reality is that these cuts would have “dire consequences” for vulnerable populations.

Next, Fiesta discussed the threats to Social Security and Medicare, with new legislation aiming to fast-track cuts through a commission that would operate largely behind closed doors. Fiesta highlighted what he described as the “undemocratic” nature of this process, which bypasses traditional legislative debate and public input. The commission's recommendations would go directly to Congress for a vote, with no amendment opportunity. Fiesta emphasized his belief that this approach undermines the transparency and accountability expected in handling programs that affect over 70 million Americans.

Finally, Fiesta discussed the disarray seen in Congress, with several cases of infighting and chaos, as various factions within the House and Senate grapple with the bill's provisions. Fiesta noted that the lack of consensus and the potential for significant changes in the Senate add to the uncertainty. The bill's focus on benefiting the wealthiest Americans at the expense of essential services for the majority underscores the need for vigilance and advocacy, he said.
