Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association, discussed the union's success in recertification elections, legislative victories against anti-union measures and ongoing challenges in public education.

Since yearly recertifications were made mandatory by Florida Senate Bill 256 in 2023, the FEA has achieved an unprecedented 100-0 record in recertification elections. Spar said these elections were approved with an average of 94 percent of the vote to maintain union representation. He said the success comes despite aggressive anti-union campaigns, including multi-million dollar efforts by groups like the Freedom Foundation. Spar credited educators for recognizing the value of union representation and rejecting attempts to undermine workers' rights.

Next, Spar discussed some of the legislative victories that have been secured through strategic relationships with lawmakers. The FEA successfully lobbied against additional funding for the Public Employees Relations Commission, which he said has implemented anti-union legislation. They also ensured that the commission must continue providing postage for ballot returns in union elections, maintaining fairness in the process.

Finally, Spar discussed the challenges in Florida's education system, particularly regarding academic freedom and book bans. He highlighted the ongoing tension between local school boards and state-appointed officials pushing for stricter content control in schools. Spar said the FEA will continue to advocate for age-appropriate materials while resisting “overzealous censorship” efforts that threaten students' academic rights and educators' professional judgment.
