Association of Administrative Law Judges Judicial Council 1 President, Judge Som Ramrup, appeared on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the issue of double-breasted judges within the Social Security Administration.
The AALJJ represents 1,000 federal judges who hear Social Security disability cases.
Double breasting is the practice of employing nonunion workers, especially in a separate division, to supplement the work of higher-paid union workers. In this instance, the Biden administration allows union and non-union judges perform the same work.
She believes the way to fix the issue of double-breasting is for the President to move the non-union judges to the bargaining unit.
Ramrup also spoke about why the judges unionized and the backlog of over 3,400 cases that need to be heard by the Social Security Administration judges.
