Davida Russell’s Journey From Local Leader to Ohio Political Candidate

Written by awfblog | December 18, 2025

In this edition of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Davida Russell shared her journey as a union member, a school bus driver and a devoted advocate for the working people in Ohio. Currently the Secretary-Treasurer of the North Coast Area Labor Federation, Russell discussed the challenges she faced during her campaign to be elected mayor of Cleveland Heights, her decision to now run for a state representative seat and her advice for other union members considering political involvement.

Russell recounted the hurdles she had to overcome while running for Cleveland Heights mayor, explaining that, although most assumed she was up against a single opponent, she actually contended with a collective coalition. All seven city council members supported her opponent, pooling resources to make the race an uphill battle. Despite losing by 1,200 votes, Russell expressed pride in her campaign, noting it was a strong showing for her first mayoral run. She reflected on the lessons learned and the resilience required when challenging entrenched political interests.

Looking ahead, Russell announced her candidacy for Ohio State Representative in District 18, a seat covering nine cities and soon to be vacated due to term limits. She explained that this opportunity brought her advocacy journey full circle, citing her earlier considerations for the position. Drawing on her union leadership, community service and decades of experience, Russell highlighted her readiness to champion issues such as school funding, voter suppression, healthcare access, women’s and workers' rights, and gerrymandering. She stressed the importance of collaborative policymaking and her capacity to work across party lines.

Russell concluded with heartfelt advice for union members and others considering a career in politics. She underscored the necessity of a strong moral foundation and a genuine passion for justice, warning listeners that politics is never easy and is rife with challenges, setbacks and emotional trials. However, she encouraged anyone committed to helping others and fighting injustice to persevere, lean on close supporters and embrace the personal sacrifices involved. Russell’s closing message was clear: the fight for fairness and equity demands those willing to step forward and make a difference.
