On today’s episode of the America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Dave McCall, International President of the United Steelworkers, reflected on the union’s evolution, its leadership transition to Roxanne Brown in 2026 and the challenges and victories that defined his time with the Steelworkers.

McCall began by discussing his career journey and the union’s ability to cultivate strong leaders through its Next Generation program. He spoke highly of Roxanne Brown, who will take over as the first woman and first African American International President of the union in March. McCall emphasized Brown’s ability to connect with members, her pivotal work in the nuclear sector and her innovative problem-solving skills. He noted that the Steelworkers have a deep tradition of preparing new leaders, ensuring the union remains resilient and adaptable.

Next, McCall recalled the turbulent period of industry bankruptcies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which tested the union’s resolve. He highlighted the solidarity and determination of union members and retirees, crediting their efforts with securing the recovery and long-term strength of the U.S. steel industry. He recounted how members stepped in to protect facilities, advocated for their communities and collaborated to identify new owners and management. McCall cited this unity as instrumental in preserving jobs, as well as protecting the nation's critical manufacturing base and national defense capabilities.

Finally, McCall addressed the ongoing battles unions face today, particularly concerning worker safety, fair bargaining and employment security. He expressed pride in the union’s health and safety teams and addressed the current challenges of contract negotiations, strikes and maintaining worker protections in the face of changing legislative and economic landscapes. His reflections offered both a tribute to past achievements and a roadmap for the next generation of labor leaders, reinforcing the importance of unity and continuous advocacy within the labor movement.
