Could America’s tech companies suffer the same fate as manufacturing?

The American Edge Project CEO Doug Kelly joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed the need to safeguard American technology through policies that embrace innovation so it does not suffer the same fate as the manufacturing sector.

The American Edge Project is an organization committed to protecting America’s tech innovation.

Kelly grew up in Adrian, Mich., a city that rapidly lost 43 percent of its manufacturing job base. He argued the same thing could easily happen with America’s technology companies if similar shortsighted policies blunt innovation and allow countries like China to take the lead.

There are currently a series of anti-innovation bills being considered by Congress directed at some of the nation’s most innovative technology companies, which would break up the big players, make it illegal to compete in certain industries and prevent them from further mergers and acquisitions, he said. At the end of the day, these technology companies are critical to holding the U.S.’s competitive edge against formidable adversaries, including China, he added.

Kelly explained that rather than hamstring technology companies, Congress needs to pass legislation such as the CHIPS for America Act to encourage innovation and production in the U.S. Breaking up these technology companies would only serve to cripple the industry at a critical time, he said.
