Jonathan Blaine, Insulators Local 16 Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee Training Coordinator, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss their apprenticeship program and its growth in the Northern California/Northwest Nevada region.
The Local 16 JATC services about 700 active members of Insulators Local 16, which covers a 57-county region in Northern California and Northwest Nevada.
Blaine talked about the apprenticeship application processes and some requirements to join the registered apprenticeship program. He noted that many of the requirements are standard, as there are only a few requirements that can be an issue and prevent a person from entering the program.
The Local 16 JATC works with high schools, NC3 programs and other pre-apprenticeship programs to drive up the number of apprenticeship applicants. While the number of apprentices have increased, Blaine also pointed out the average age of apprentice applicants has decreased. He credits this development to the work done with the outreach programs.
Finally, Blaine discussed the training opportunities available through the Local 16 JATC. The Train-the-Trainers program offered by the Insulation Industry International Apprentice and Training Fund enhances the quality of training offered by the Local’s instructors and ultimately ensures top-quality training for their apprentices.
