Written by awfblog | June 30, 2023

Bill Sherer II, Business Manager for Ironworkers Local 550, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to talk about his time with the Ironworkers and his Local’s apprenticeship program. Sherer also discussed his history in politics and his campaign to become the next mayor of Canton.

William “Bill” Sherer II is a third-generation Ironworker, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who are both previous Business Managers at Local 550. After struggling with career choices after high school, he applied to the Ironworkers apprenticeship program. After many years of work in and with the leadership of Local 550, he was elected to lead the Local as Business Manager in 2005.

Following the passing of the previous Canton City Council President, the Mayor approached Sherer to run for the position. His father always believed there should be someone from labor in local politics to help stand up for the middle class. After winning the election and leading the Canton City Council for five and a half years, Sherer hopes to take the next step to help his community as he runs for Mayor. After winning the Canton Mayoral Democratic primary in April, Sherer will run against the Republican candidate in November.

Sherer’s running on a platform of safety in the Canton community. Along with wanting a safer Canton, Sherer is working to invest in the community. Sherer plans to provide good-paying jobs for future generations of Canton citizens, raising families into the middle class. He believes his ability to help recruit apprentices and grow the Local, has given him the necessary skills to lead Canton into a more prosperous future.
