On today’s episode of America’s Work Force Union Podcast, Sue Browne, Rapid Response Coordinator for District 1 of the United Steelworkers, took center stage. With more than 30 years as a Steelworker and deep roots in Local 5965 in Michigan, Browne reflected on her path from the assembly line to union activism. She shared insights into the USW Rapid Response program, its communication strategies, and its Balancing the Scales campaign, which aims to advance core workplace issues for union members in Ohio and Michigan.
Browne began by explaining the essence and legacy of Rapid Response within the United Steelworkers, now celebrating its 30th anniversary. This nonpartisan grassroots initiative is designed to educate, mobilize and empower steelworker members around legislation and policy decisions that directly affect their working lives. By building robust communication networks at every level, the program ensures timely alerts and coordinated action when issues arise in state legislatures or in Washington, D.C.
Communication with members, Browne noted, presents unique challenges in today’s media ecosystem, where misinformation and shifting habits abound. Her approach emphasizes face-to-face meetings and tailored strategies for each Local, recognizing that both younger and older workers engage with information differently. By focusing on legislation, workplace safety, fair benefits and other core issues, Rapid Response resonates across generations. Browne stressed that active participation, localized outreach and practical plans help foster engagement and collective advocacy.
Finally, Browne discussed the USW’s Balancing the Scales campaign, designed to counter corporate agendas and spotlight critical worker concerns ranging from healthcare affordability to fair trade and tax fairness. Browne detailed the campaign’s efforts to collect worker signatures and send letters to every member of Congress, amplifying workers’ voices and monitoring political responses. Despite an increase in political polarization, Rapid Response maintains a focus on issues rather than party divisions, aiming for unity among members who ultimately share common goals of fair treatment and workplace security.
