ATF report: To fix teacher shortage, increase pay and respect

Written by awfblog | August 16, 2022

Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT) President Melissa Cropper joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast and discussed a report released by the American Federation of Teachers that addressed the nationwide teacher shortage and what needs to be done to attract more qualified educators.

Cropper said more needs to be done to respect teachers in their professions and give them the autonomy they need to do their jobs. Unnecessary paperwork and testing needs to be eliminated, and teachers should be more fairly compensated for their work, she added.

Cropper also discussed a recent Baldwin Wallace University survey that revealed parents overwhelmingly support public education in Ohio and the performance of teachers. She also talked about a divisive union busting campaign from the Freedom Foundation, and a recent union win from Equitus Health workers who successfully joined the OFT.
