Emil Ramirez, International Vice President of Administration for the United Steelworkers (USW), joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the ongoing U.S. Steel takeover by Nippon Steel and his optimism for the future growth of the labor movement.
With a career spanning nearly four decades in the labor movement, Ramirez offered valuable insights into the challenges facing rail workers and the broader implications for worker safety across industries. Ramirez began his union career as a Pipefitter B in 1986 with USW Local 15162, in Topeka, Kan., quickly rising through the ranks to become a leader within the USW. His experience includes serving as Director of District 11, where he led more than 34,000 members across nine Midwestern states, including six So-Called “Right to Work” states.
A major topic discussed was Nippon Steel's proposed takeover of U.S. Steel, which Ramirez criticized for its lack of commitment to job security and investment. He highlighted concerns about executives receiving large payouts while workers face uncertainty. Ramirez stressed the importance of transparency and the potential negative impact on domestic steel production and national security.
Looking ahead, Ramirez expressed optimism about the labor movement's growth, citing a successful year of organizing and the potential for manufacturing to return to the U.S. He emphasized the need for unions to stay connected with their members and continue advocating for their interests in the face of political and economic challenges.
