Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for the American Legion, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the organization's recent national convention, the election of a new national commander and the U.S. Navy's 250th anniversary.

The American Legion's national convention, held in Tampa, Fla., featured various initiatives, including a veterans gaming studio and a Department of Veterans Affairs Hackathon focused on improving healthcare access and operational efficiency. Stouffer spoke about the six-day VA Claims Clinic, which assisted veterans in filing claims and a small business workshop guiding veteran entrepreneurs. The convention also hosted a Hiring Our Heroes career fair, connecting veterans with potential employers and offering LinkedIn profile advice, he added.

Dan Wiley, an airman from Kansas, was elected as the new American Legion National Commander. Stoffer gave an overview of Wiley's background, which includes 28 years as a Municipal and District Court Judge and continued involvement in farming. Stoffer emphasized Wiley's personal connection to the Be the One campaign, which aims to prevent veteran suicide. The new National Commander plans to prioritize suicide prevention training and improve mental health support for veterans during his tenure.

Stoffer also spoke about the October issue of The American Legion Magazine, which features a salute to the U.S. Navy's 250th birthday. He discussed the Navy's rich history, including its brief disbandment from 1785 to 1794 and its continued importance in global affairs. The article highlights key inventions from Navy research, such as GPS and radar and explores the origins of iconic Navy uniforms like the Dixie cup cap and peacoat.
