Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for The American Legion, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the organization's response to proposed federal cuts affecting veterans, the importance of the Elizabeth Dole Act and the unique history of China Post 1.
Stoffer began by discussing the American Legion’s efforts to monitor potential federal cuts that could impact veteran employment and benefits. Stoffer revealed the organization is conducting a comprehensive survey to gather data on how these cuts might impact veterans' healthcare services, employment opportunities and veteran-owned businesses with federal contracts. The Legion aims to present a fact-driven case to policymakers, emphasizing the importance of maintaining veteran preference in federal hiring and the 5 percent mandate for disabled veteran-owned business contracts.
Stoffer then discussed the significance of the recently passed Elizabeth Dole Act, which addresses critical gaps in veteran care and caregiver support. He shared the story of Army Corporal Katie Benson, who died from mesothelioma at 35 due to burn pit exposure in Kuwait. The act, signed into law in January 2024, provides mental health services for caregivers, increases disability benefits and repeals outdated laws affecting remarried spouses. This legislation aims to fulfill the promises made to veterans exposed to toxic contamination during their service.
Finally, the conversation touched on an article in the April edition of the Legion Magazine that tells the history of China Post 1, an American Legion post operating in exile since 1948. With no physical home, this post boasts about 1,200 members worldwide, many with high-security clearances or intelligence backgrounds. Stoffer discussed the post's unique operations, including "Operation Alice," a clandestine mission to provide ice machines to troops during Operation Desert Storm, showcasing the post's ability to support military personnel in unconventional ways.
