Jeff Stoffer, Director of the American Legion’s Media and Communications Division, joined the America's Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the Legion's century-long involvement in youth baseball, the consequences of a broken immigration system and the importance of America's global leadership.
This year, the American Legion is celebrating 100 years of involvement in baseball, with a special commemorative article in the July edition of the American Legion Magazine highlighting the organization's impact on the sport. Stoffer explained that since 1925, over 10 million athletes have played American Legion baseball, including 89 players who are now enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The program, which began as a way to promote fitness and citizenship among youth, has evolved into a significant platform for developing not just athletic skills, but also character and responsibility. Stoffer emphasized how the program's low-cost structure allows for widespread participation, fostering teamwork and community engagement across the country.
Next, Stoffer discussed the story of a veteran who took his life after a 17-year battle with the U.S. immigration system. He said the story highlighted the need for immigration reform, particularly for military personnel and their families. Stoffer detailed how a simple misunderstanding on a form led to a lifetime ban from the country, despite the individual's service to the United States. The American Legion is advocating for changes to prevent such tragedies, including revisions to the special immigrant visa process and an end to lifetime bans for minor application errors, he said.
Lastly, Stoffer discussed an article by Alan Dowd on America's irreplaceable role in global leadership. The piece explained that despite public opinion favoring a step back from international involvement, the United States remains the only nation capable of maintaining global order. Stoffer explained that the story talks about how America's post-World War II leadership was crucial in deterring “tyrannical” regimes and supporting Western democracies. He emphasized the need for continued U.S. engagement on the world stage, despite the challenges and costs associated with this responsibility.
