American Legion Director discusses military commemorations

Written by awfblog | April 18, 2025

Jeff Stoffer, Director of Media and Communications for The American Legion, joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss quality of life issues in the military, the politicization of the armed forces and upcoming 250th anniversary events for several of the U.S. military branches.

Stoffer began by highlighting concerns about service members' quality of life, citing a survey showing only 32 percent of active-duty families would recommend service to young family members. He emphasized the need for improved housing allowances, spousal employment opportunities and overall compensation to address recruitment challenges and ensure service members can make ends meet. Stoffer stressed that Congress must prioritize these issues to maintain an effective all-volunteer force.

Next, Stoffer discussed the relationship between the military and society, referencing Samuel Huntington's 1957 book “The Soldier and the State.” Stoffer explained how Huntington's concept of a politically agnostic military remains relevant today, cautioning against the increasing politicization of the armed forces in public discourse. He noted that this politicization could negatively impact recruitment efforts and erode the trust between the military and the public.

Finally, Stoffer talked about upcoming events celebrating the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps. He highlighted plans for parades, commemorations and the reconstruction of historic sites like Philadelphia's Tun Tavern. Stoffer said these observances, spanning from June to November, aim to honor the legacy and sacrifices of American service members while educating the public about military history.
