Alliance for Retired Americans Executive Director Rich Fiesta joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss the organization’s annual report, which outlines Congressional voting records from 2023 and how proposed cuts from a former U.S. President could impact workers and retirees.
The Alliance for Retired Americans’ annual report looks at Congressional voting records from the previous year. The report tallies 10 votes from the House and 10 votes from the Senate to provide a cumulative look at how legislators voted on the issues that impacted retired Americans. Fiesta discussed the results from 2023 and the legislators who scored 100 percent for pro-retiree votes.
Fiesta then talked about recent statements by former President Donald Trump regarding ways to cut Social Security and Medicare benefits. His suggested cuts would raise the retirement age and impact how cost-of-living adjustments are calculated. Fiesta explained the impact of raising the retirement age and why it would harm workers and retirees alike.
A recent poll by the National Institute on Retired Security surveyed Americans on cuts to retirement benefits. Fiesta discussed the results and how the Alliance is using this research. It revealed that most Americans do not want to see cuts made to retirement benefits. They want to get back the money they put into the system, Fiesta noted.
